Christopher Zhang received his BFA in 1984 from East China University and his MFA in 1993 from Rhode Island College. He has served as a visiting professor at University of Connecticut, Harvard University, as well as numerous museums and art associations. Zhang has had solo exhibitions throughout the United States and is widely recognized for both his artistic practice and his role as an educator. His work has received numerous honors, including a Gold Medal from the Salmagundi Club in 2022, as well as three First Place Awards from the Lyme Art Association. Zhang’s artistic foundation was shaped by rigorous pre- and post-college training in China, where his education was deeply influenced by 19th-century Russian realism and the academic traditions of the Soviet era. This classical training emphasized disciplined life-model drawing and painting, with a strong focus on color contrast, value relationships, and expressive brushwork. Rooted in both Eastern and Western European realist traditions, Zhang’s approach merges the luminous color sensibilities of Impressionism with the bold, expressive brushstrokes characteristic of Russian realism. This synthesis allows him to balance structural strength with painterly freedom, works that feel authentic and emotionally engaging. His paintings reflect a lifelong commitment to realism as a living tradition that honors the past while remaining expressive, immediate, and contemporary.
