Cornelia Emery, 1937-2025 The world is a bit less vibrant with the passing of Cornelia “Posh” Emery on December 3, 2025. Posh loved her family, her dog, making art, and being in the company of artists, reading entire books in a day, traveling through France, heated blankets, and extra-cold martinis. A Yankee to the core, she loved the ocean, though she secretly believed that the Atlantic was the only ocean worth its salt. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the late William A. and Kathleen M.H. (Turnbull) Thompson, Cornelia received her B.A. from Smith College and studied at the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She was an active juried Artist Member of the Carmel Art Association (CAA) and a founding member of the Monterey Bay Plein Air Artists Association (MBPAPA). Prior to her life as a working artist in Carmel, Posh worked at Polaroid during its heyday; taught English as a second language; organized poetry and French language groups in Princeton, Philadelphia, and Carmel; and contributed her illustrations to many special projects. Cornelia went on her first date with her husband James just after returning from a ski trip, arriving with a prominent turtleneck sunburn and a bad cough. He was smitten by her smarts and wit, and he remained smitten throughout their nearly 64 years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling together, with extended stays in India, England, and France. Cornelia is survived by James, as well as her two daughters Elizabeth Emery and Victoria Emery, her grandson Griffin Morgan, and her dog, Molly. Posh’s paintings can be found in private collections the world over. She is known for capturing iconic landscapes in oil or watercolor on canvas, panel, or paper all around the Monterey Peninsula (especially Carmel Beach) as well as her delightful, expressionist dog portraits. In recent years she eschewed large canvases for small, intimate moments and often chose gouache as her medium. This obituary was written by Victoria Emery with contributions from Elizabeth Emery and James Emery.
