British, b. 1963 Born in Berkshire in 1963, Dave McKean is a polymath whose work has fundamentally redefined the visual language of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. A graduate of the Berkshire College of Art and Design, McKean emerged as a revolutionary force in the 1990s by dismantling the traditional boundaries of comic art. By blending painting, photography, sculpture, and digital manipulation, he moved the medium away from simple line work toward a "total design" philosophy. This approach was famously immortalized in his covers for Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, which Apple later recognized as a milestone in the history of digital creativity. McKean’s bibliography is a testament to his versatility, encompassing over eighty award-winning books. He has collaborated with the world’s most influential thinkers and storytellers, from illustrating Richard Dawkins’ The Magic of Reality to Stephen King’s Wizard and Glass and Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck Cookbook. His solo graphic novel, Cages, remains a masterpiece of the form, earning the Harvey, Ignatz, and Alph-Art awards. His profound interest in the intersection of memory and history culminated in Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash, a commission for the Imperial War Museum that expanded into a multimedia performance showcased at Tate Britain. Beyond the printed page, McKean is a celebrated director and "Director of Story" at the three-Michelin-star restaurant The Fat Duck. His cinematic output includes the visually arresting MirrorMask (produced with the Jim Henson Company) and the award-winning feature Luna. A tireless explorer of storytelling in all its guises, he has designed nearly two-hundred album covers for artists ranging from Alice Cooper to Tori Amos. Currently based on the Isle of Oxney in Kent, McKean continues to push the limits of narrative art, illustrating definitive editions of classics like Neuromancer and Gormenghast while insisting that story remains the essential pulse of human creativity.
