By blending painting, photography, sculpture, and digital manipulation, he moved the medium away from simple line work toward a "total design" philosophy. This approach was famously immortalized in his covers for Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, which Apple later recognized as a milestone in the history of digital creativity. McKean’s bibliography is a testament to his versatility, encompassing over eighty award-winning books. He has collaborated with the world’s most influential thinkers and storytellers, from illustrating Richard Dawkins’ The Magic of Reality to Stephen King’s Wizard and Glass and Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck Cookbook.
