David Robinson was born and raised in a small town in the Mississippi Delta. Much of his youth was spent exploring the pristine woods and bodies of water near his home, frequently digging through old trash piles looking for antique glass bottles and relics. Robinson's father was a dedicated sportsman, so many weekends were spent hunting and fishing with him. However, throughout his life, David have always found the greatest solace and engagement as a maker and have produced objects in a variety of media including stained glass, drawing, painting, print-making, etc….anything involving working with his hands. Years later, after graduating college with a degree in French and English and while working full-time, Robinson began formally studying drawing and painting at Georgia State University. Around the year 2000, he discovered ceramics and fell completely in love with the medium. Soon after, David began to work exclusively in clay and studied ceramics for years at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta. He also enrolled in as many ceramic workshops in the Southeast as he could afford and as time would permit, while working full-time. In 2015, Robinson “quit his day job” and began a new life as a full-time studio ceramist. Within months of this transition, David applied to and was accepted into some of the most prestigious residency programs in the US (and world). These include The Hambidge Center, The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Gaya Ceramic Arts Centre in Bali, and in 2022, Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark. His work has been selected for numerous important exhibitions throughout the United States and resides in collections around the world.
