About the Artist: Furst currently lives in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he operates Ars Longa Press, a fine print atelier specializing in mezzotint, etching, and lithography. Many of the works present a theme of climbing in their views of steps and ladders in architectural settings. The mood intended may be summarized in the artist’s statement: “There is mystery in the mundane.” Grants and fellowships include North Carolina Arts Council Artists Fellowships in 2006 and 1996 as well as a 1994-95 Arts Council Artists Project Grant for “421 Nights,” a set of ten prints from copper and glass plates. Furst was a Fellow at Yaddo and at the MacDowell Colony in the 1980s. Furst has received the 1999 Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, a Distinguished Teaching Professorship at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and the 1996 UNCW Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award. On the faculty of the Department of Art and Art History since 1985, he has taught courses in printmaking, drawing, and computer animation and was chari of the department from 2002-2009.The artist has shown widely in national and international exhibitions, including the International Print Triennial, Krakow, Poland; Norwegian International Print Triennial; Sapporo International Print Biennial in Japan, the Macedonia International Print Triennial, and the British International Miniature Print Exhibition. Furst exhibited etchings in the invitational 12-artist show “Interiors” at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh in the fall of 2000. Collections include the Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University; Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City, Missouri; Milwaukee Art Museum.
