Doug Powell's introduction to recycling started as a young teenager growing up in Central New Jersey when he would go door to door throughout the neighborhood collecting used newspapers and glass containers that would ultimately end up at the Saturday morning paper drive with the local Boy Scouts. Many years later, Doug’s inner creativity from his youth came calling, and after serving 10 years in the US Navy, this Gulf War Veteran’s art adventure has become a full time endeavor. His current medium is cast-off computer keys from clunky old keyboards that come from a variety of origins. Each piece has a unique tangible history that bears the weathered landscape of thousands of uses. “I want the viewer to ponder the infinite profound combination of thoughts, ideas and inspirations that have surely passed through this Intellectual portal and all made possible with just the common computer key.” Says Doug.Since pioneering the art form in 2010, Doug has transacted over 25 computer keyboard mosaics to Ripley's "Believe It Or Not!" permanently installed in over a dozen of their Museums world wide. Since 2017 Powell has exhibited regularly at Art Basel Miami and other major fairs, and was featured in the Spectrum Miami Art Show, winning Director’s Award in 2017 and 2018 as well as Spectrum Selects and Spotlight Awards. Powell's list of commissions is quickly growing and include Ripley's "Believe It Or Not!", Marriott Resorts, Santa Clara, California, Mary Kay Headquarters, Dallas, Texas, Intel Corporation, Hyatt House, Orlando, University of Miami and University of Denver as well as many private collectors including patrons from the Dominican Republic, Finland, Mali West Africa, Austria, Hollywood California, Boston, Mass. and New York City. The innovative artist Doug Powell creates theillusion of three-dimensional form through theuse and arrangement of recycled, or up cycled, computer keyboard keys. Up cycling has a positive environmental impact due to the rescue and re-purposing of manufactured objects. The reuse of materials has been employed by artists throughout history from Amish quiltersand American folk artists to Modern Masters, such as Picasso, Joseph Cornell, and Robert Rauschenberg, all of whom have reused materials or found objects to create new, more complex works of art.
