Douglas Argüelles Cruz is a Cuban contemporary artist whose work traverses painting, drawing, installation, and conceptual objects. His practice is rooted in a philosophical inquiry into time, space, memory, and perception, exploring the boundaries between the visible and the imagined. Through symbolic gestures and layered compositions, he constructs poetic spaces that invite reflection on the fragility of human experience and the tension between thought and emotion. A graduate of the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro (1998) and the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana (2004), Argüelles Cruz later returned to ISA as a professor of painting (2004–2012). This academic foundation continues to inform his intellectually rigorous and meditative approach to artmaking. His work has been exhibited internationally in Cuba, Europe, North Africa, and the United States, including shows at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Algeria, Amadis Gallery (Madrid), the FIAC Shanghai, and multiple editions of the Havana Biennial. He has been awarded prestigious residencies such as Residency Unlimited (Brooklyn), the Cuban Artist Fund (New York), Batiscafo / Triangle Art Trust (Havana), and the Gilbert Brownstone Foundation (Paris), expanding his research-based practice into global contexts. Argüelles Cruz’s works form part of major public and private collections worldwide, including the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Havana), Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, as well as collections in Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Mexico, Canada, Portugal, and Algeria. He is currently represented by Gell Fine Art (Miami / New Jersey), with additional works available on Singulart and Saatchi Art. He currently lives and works in Union City, New Jersey, USA.
