Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1956, Earl Hamilton had a paintbrush in his hand when most boys had baseball bats. His father, George Hamilton, a well-established painter, gave Earl a watercolor set on his sixth birthday. His mother, Satsuko Hamilton, also an accomplished artist, encouraged and nurtured his creative growth throughout his youth. Earl recalls, “I struggled for years with the problems of composition, color, style, and technique. My imagination ran wild. I experimented and played with my paints with pure joy, never really thinking I would later in life make a livelihood of art.” Raised in Oregon and a graduate of Oregon State University, Hamilton has developed a distinctive style rooted in abstraction and expression. His paintings encompass abstracted landscapes, waterscapes, florals, cityscapes, and pure non-objective works—each layered with texture, color, and light to create depth and atmosphere. Using acrylics and collage elements, he builds rich surfaces that feel both spontaneous and contemplative. Now living and working in Oregon, Earl Hamilton continues to paint with the same curiosity and joy that inspired him as a child, transforming the familiar world around him into vibrant, poetic abstractions.
