Eduardo Cardozo (Uruguay, b. 1969)Eduardo Cardozo graduated from the Instituto Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes of Uruguay in 1990, studying under Ernesto Aroztegui. He also completed four years of studies at the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidad de la República. Through a scholarship, he studied engraving with Luis Camnitzer in Valdottavo, Italy, and attended courses in video (“El ojo disidente”) and philosophy of art with Andrea Carriquiry.He has received numerous distinctions, including First Prize at the Salón Nacional twice (2004 and 2012), the Bicentennial Painting Prize (2011), the Montevideo Municipal Biennial Prize (1994), and the Paul Cézanne Prize (1991), which granted him a study scholarship in France.Cardozo has participated in major international biennials, including the 1st and 5th Mercosur Biennials in Porto Alegre, Brazil (1997 and 2005), the Cuenca Biennial in Ecuador (2001), the IV Bienal Do ut do “La morale dei singoli” in Pompeii, Italy (2018–2019), and the Beijing Biennale (2021). In 2024, he represents Uruguay at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with the work Latente.Since the late 1980s, he has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions in Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, the United States, Germany, Spain, Austria, France, and China. His work is included in important public and private collections in Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Germany, France, and the United States.In 2008, the Argentine publisher Arte al Día released the monograph Eduardo Cardozo: Obras realizadas entre 1990 y 2008, offering an extensive overview of his artistic production.He has participated in international art fairs such as Arteamericas (Miami, with Galería Sur, 2006), arteba (Buenos Aires, with Galería Sur, 2006), Cornice Art Fair (Venice, with Galería Sur, 2007), ARCOmadrid (with Galería Sur, 2008), SP-Arte (São Paulo, with Galería Sur, 2022), ESTE ARTE (Punta del Este, with Galería Sur, 2017–2023), and Pinta Miami (with AppArt Paris, 2023).Since the 1990s, Cardozo has expanded his practice into performance and the performing arts. He designed stage sets for No matarás by Tamara Cubas (Teatro Victoria, 2003) and Intento cero by Graciela Figueroa (Teatro Solís, 1996), and was a member of the performance group Moxhelis (1992–1994). He has also developed interventions in public space, including Contrato de trabajo (Porto Alegre, 2005), El Quijote de Tres Cruces (Montevideo, unfinished, 1994), and Señal de ajuste (2007), an intervention using private media.In collaboration with Álvaro Zinno, he produced the videos Estampitas (1990), Like a Piece of the Sky, of the Sky (1990), and Basal (2020). With Agustín Banchero and Lucas Cilintano, he created the video La conciencia de Sísifo (2012), which received the Grand Acquisition Prize at the 55th Wifredo Díaz Valdéz National Visual Arts Prize.Cardozo has also carried out large-scale collaborative projects and site-specific interventions, including La quimera de la seguridad, o cómo vivir sin correr riesgos with Jorge Barreiro at the Atrium of Montevideo City Hall (1999), as well as multiple commissions for the Vik hotel group: Estancia Vik (José Ignacio, 2012), Casa tierra at Bahía Vik (2015), murals at Playa Vik and Viña Vik (Chile, 2016), interventions at Galleria Vik Milano (2019), and an extensive mural for the restaurant La Susana at Hotel Bahía Vik José Ignacio (2023).Alongside his artistic practice, he has taught seminars on contemporary painting in Casablanca and regularly hosts students from IAVA, the Instituto de Profesores Artigas, and visiting artists in his studio, fostering dialogue and exchange around contemporary art.
