Edward Spaulding DeVoe was born in 1948 to an artistic family and was taught lessons in watercolor by his grandmother, Shirley Spaulding DeVoe, an author well versed in early American decoration. At 20 years old, he joined the Art Students League in New York City to study with renowned artist Frank H. Mason, and earned his B.A. in Fine Art from Colgate University. DeVoe teaches the techniques of Old Masters at workshops and to private students. His work showcases his dedication to continuing the tradition of the Old Masters, going as far as crafting his own paint as the cold press oil paints contemporary to the 17th century are no longer available. Many of his paintings share qualities with Renaissance-era works, and his mastery of the natural brilliance and transparency of the paint is apparent in his work. From mid-August to early December 2011, DeVoe was an Artist-in-Residence at the luxury resort, Ocean House, in Watch Hill, Rhode Island for Lily Pad Gallery. While there, he lectured and demonstrated many of his techniques. His work is featured in public and private collections in the United States and abroad, and his exhibitions in New England have opened to great acclaim. DeVoe continues to lecture to select groups and teaches at his atelier and the Washington Art Association in Washington, Connecticut.
