Edward LentchEdward Lentsch born 1959“There might be a whiff of German abstractionist Anselm Keifer’s grandiosity inLentsch’s ambitious images, but his bravura gestures have an authentic individuality.” -The Star Tribune, MinneapolisA well established mid-career painter, EDWARD LENTSCH works his widely mixed mediainto organically textured canvas, exhibiting unique surfaces that reflect acontemplative element of both alchemy and spiritual introspection. The spiritualovertones of Lentsch’s painting are captured by his titles, where the use of mysticalimagery and esoteric subjects inspire the imagination of the viewer. His painting process is as compelling as his technique, as Lentsch strives for what herefers to as defining synectics ---a “dialog that defines synectic reason…” (a concept firstcoined by 20thCentury visionary inventor, Buckminster Fuller). In the book, Synectics; TheDevelopment of Creative Capacity, author William J.J. Gordon , defines synectics as aproblem solving approach that stimulates thought processes of which the subject is generallyunaware. Gordon encapsulates this method as “Trusting things that are alien, andalienating things that are trusted." In Lentsch’s work, paintings are often paired with titlesthat attempt to explain this idea of synectic reason by connecting a vast matrix ofcomplex relationships between science and mysticism; the metaphysical and thespiritual. Lentsch's technique of «Hot Pot Fusion» and mixed media while beingstructurally archival in nature, is also able to use this process for a new construct inpainting while dancing in rhythmic measure to a more vast matrix of intention.“My paintings are derived from a source of contemplation and fascination with thewonders of an awesome logic that exists in nature,” Lentsch explains in one of his manyessays on the subject. For Lentsch, “as words define those things that are mostimportant to our definition of self, art is the translation of those same but most importantdefinitions.”Lentsch is an artist, author, architectural builder, designer, inventor, and entrepreneur. Heresides in Minneapolis, Minnesota and works out of his studio located in the Warehousedistrict of Minneapolis. Lentsch is also the founder of Artist League Studios, a Minneapolisbased think-tank/studio for emerging artists.Artist Statement“Bits & Pieces Put Together to Present a Semblance of a Whole.” I have driven past thisenormous sign by Lawrence Weiner at the Walker Art Center innumerous times, and italways reminds me of the Singularity of artistic expression. The principle of Singularity isbest explained as the continuity of a unique purpose within a multitude of diverse tasks andinformation. Synectics is the infinite potential of connecting the dots within this matrix andsuggests the path to exponential knowledge. In my process and use of materials, I find aconnection between the most elemental phenomena of the universe and magical experiencesthat articulate something very precious in our connection to things around us.In Chinese Philosophy it is said that as you take on the attributes of the things you focus yourattention on, you acquire the power that underlies them. This is what I refer to as “Defining Synectics.” In William J.J. Gordon’s book, TheDevelopment of Creative Capacity, synectics is characterized as a problem solving approachthat stimulates through processes of which the subject is generally unaware. Gordonencapsulates this method as “Trusting things that are alien, and alienating things that aretrusted.” In my work, paintings are often paired with titles that attempt to clarify this idea ofsynectic reasoning by connecting the vast matrix of complex relationships between scienceand mysticism, the metaphysical and the spiritual. Like one magical discovery after another, each painting progresses from a fresh combination of colors and textures as they might existin nature as refraction, tessellation, or as a phenomenon of entropy. It is an infinite power thateludes me in its vastness as I observe nature and ponder the workings of the universe. Mypainting is based on the preponderance of opposites, and the fusion of elements as Icontemplate the principles that govern this dynamism.73660 El Paseo Palm Desert, CA 92260 760.341.1056www.melissamorganfineart.com info@melissamorganfineart.com.
