Clementine currently lives and works in New York City. Having studied at Parsons, Harvard, and Boston College, she has an expansive foundation upon which she has developed her artistic career. In 2007, her earliest exhibition was accompanied by her first live auction sale; an event sponsored by the late Robert Rauschenberg. Recent exhibitions in Brussels, New York, and Miami, have all featured acrylic works, her primary medium of choice. She was recognized by World Art Dubai’s Emerging Artist Award as among the best of 2016 international emerging talent. Artist StatementArt is not for your eyes only. It’s to be embraced in your hands, through experience and in the culture around you. I employ these beliefs in painting across series that delve into visual, emotional and tangible interactions between art and the viewer. Two facets are continually at the forefront of my practice: pushing cultivated skillsets through artistic expression and innovating new techniques the world has yet to see. Overview of SeriesSentiments in Color Series: Striking a harmony between intention and spontaneity, this series depicts an abstract reflection of the balance within our lives. Different styles of strokes represent an artistic oscillation between what I’m feeling versus thinking during the creative process. Throughout layering of paint, a color palette organically develops in a visual conversation between color space and form. While we all strive for balance in our lives, in many forms, I intend to capture the very essence of it aesthetically complete. A viewer may experience balance, then, no matter what takes place outside the art itself. During the development of every piece, I rotate the canvas on all sides for a fresh perspective. I ask viewers take part in this experience and hang the work in multiple orientations to elicit a different response and see where their eyes newly gravitate. Sentir Series: “Sentir,” meaning “to feel” in French, is a series based upon feeling in color and texture. Through the exploration of surface texture, these works integrate an array of mixed media with application by paintbrush, palette knife, and hand. I build upon the experience of the viewer to interact with art, both emotionally and palpably. Rotating canvases, capturing new perspectives and feeling the surface textures transforms the traditional notion of art solely for viewing. Visual depth created by color accompanies gestural impasto raised atop the canvases surface. The sensation of experiencing the texture of art is captured with the same freedom I pour into creation. Filter Series: I am intrigued by how I can reflect our digital era in a fine art form. In our current social media inspired culture, everyone finds their inner-artist by editing images in the palm of their hands. This series is comprised of interchangeable art filters that overlay paintings, instantly transforming them, just as with digital filters in platforms such as Instagram. These fine art filters go beyond limitations set by handheld technology and while embracing the notion of “graphic,” each is painted completely freehand with many layers of paint for an opaque effect. Themes captured range from the concept of reinvention to the conspicuous pucker. In this series, the concept of co-creation is locked into an artistic form, reflecting our present sociocultural context while serving a meaningful reference for generations to come.
