The Christopher Hill Gallery Artist Bio/Resume – Gabriela Aguilo Gabriela Aguilo is a self taught artist that has spent her entire life creating art. She has worked in textiles, glass, stone and currently, the last 15 years painting in encaustic. Throughout her career she has focused on creating a visual language that expresses her journey to the Self. Who she is in an authentic way, who is asking that question, and is she living from her heart and passion. Her mixed media paintings speak of that journey in a dreamlike language of the unconscious and the symbols within her dreams and their meaning. Her big open sky landscapes invite the viewer into the indomitable nature of the soul. They seem to open a door to a calm place of grace and ask the viewer an undetermined question. They give pause and wrap the viewer in a deep place of peace opening a portal into an unknown transcendant landscape. She creates paintings on watercolor paper in mixed media and then mounts that image onto a cradled wood panel. Once the image is complete, she pours Encaustic beeswax onto the painting in a creative way which encases the painting and the viewer in a dreamlike texture. It adds a 3D effect to the painting and an ethereal mystery to the image that is truly magical. Aguilo speaks of a tension between the solid platform created by the daily loving practice of her craft and the leap into the unknown image that wants to be born or "shamaned" into the world. It’s a scary place that is overcome with knowledge and daring. It is art as a journey that tells her a story about herself. Gabriela Aguilo - Born in Cordova Argentina in 1963 Lives and works in California
