Gary Goldberg is a professor of Art at Midwestern State University, where he has taught for 35 years. He has served the University as Interim Chair of the Juanita & Ralph Harvey School of Visual Arts and is currently Director of the Juanita Harvey Art Gallery. He received a MFA from the University of Nebraska. Professor Goldberg has been awarded a grant from the Rotary Foundation international exchange program, through which he traveled to India. He has also been the recipient of an Emerging Artist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. During his years at MSU, Professor Goldberg has earned 15 university research grants and one developmental leave. Goldberg’s photographs have been included in over one hundred exhibitions and publications throughout his career. One-person exhibitions mounted by Professor Goldberg have been shown extensively throughout north America. artist statementThis body of work began as photographs made in Oaxaca, Mexico and are part of a larger photographic series entitled, FINDING THE UNIVERSE IN OAXACA. The actual physical subject matter of these images came directly from the richly layered walls and facades found in Oaxaca City. These photographic images have been transformed into textiles using a felting process at Taller Afelpado, San Agustín Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico. These works are imbued with references to landscape and Mexican mythologies.These textiles explore many threads and one central concept: is landscape a construct? In this work I am making references to the landscape by imposing a false horizon line and creating a pictorial space that refers to a land-sky relationship. These works seek to explore the idea of abstracted landscapes by bifurcating a composition and utilizing dark and light values. This work also explores borders, the passage of time, and mapping. It is my hope you find the universe in Oaxaca that I have seen and created.
