Representational & Narrative Painter | Conceptual Artist Gary Westford is a representational painter and conceptual artist whose work explores the American landscape through an environmental lens, addressing social equity and civil rights. His art often employs surreal juxtapositions to create a “shock of recognition,” challenging the viewer to confront deeper societal issues. Westford’s unique approach combines traditional painting with found objects and architectural materials, transforming his work into immersive, site-specific environments. His paintings depict evocative landscapes, from sky and cloud formations to tranquil bodies of water, and feature iconic mid-century transportation vehicles such as 1940s-50s automobiles, aircraft, and boats. These are often paired with three-dimensional elements, including vintage screen doors, prayer stands, and classical wooden columns, adding layers of meaning to each piece. Born in Oakland, California, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Westford’s artistic journey began at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied under prominent Bay Area Figurative artists Elmer Bischoff and Joan Brown. There, he also encountered the work of Robert Colescott, whose bold social satire of the African American experience profoundly influenced him. In the late 1970s, Westford relocated to Oregon, where he began a distinguished career as an arts educator with a deep commitment to social justice and transformative change. He spent more than two decades working within the juvenile and adult prison systems in California and Oregon, using art to foster growth and rehabilitation. In 1991, Westford received a national teaching award for his pioneering work in corrections education, where he used art as a tool to promote social change and personal development among incarcerated individuals. His dual career as an artist and educator reflects his passion for creativity and activism, positioning his work as a powerful commentary on the intersection of art, society, and justice.
