The son of a very successful painter and father to another, destined to be one of the most collectable artists of recent times, Gerhard Nesvadba was born near Darmstadt in war-torn West Germany, in 1941. Two years later, his parents moved to Austria. Apart from the encouragement of his father, Gerhard's early life and training include a high school teacher who recognized the talent in the young man who was constantly drawing and painting. The artist's brilliant debut in Austria at age twenty-seven was followed by a remarkable string of European exhibitions in his early thirties. Extensive traveling throughout Europe gave Gerhard his love for landscapes; and his immediate, extraordinary success in the Impressionist style was rewarded by a lifetime commitment to the genre. Whereas gifted musicians are sometimes born with perfect pitch, Gerhard Nesvadba belongs to the small cadre of genuinely skilled artists who have an innate command of the foundations of composition, color and light. Traditional in approach, yet extremely personal in application, Nesvadba's rural landscapes and cottage scenes are effused with tranquil sunlight. In each landscape, look for the coolness of distant mountains and clouds in classic balance with brilliant fields of color. His proportions are unerring, his enjoyment of the balanced asymmetry of nature is warm and witty, and his love of paint is evident in every brushstroke. Gerhard's mastery of brilliant colors that flourish on a wonderful summer afternoon has found way to the canvas. In a poetic manner, his painting may be traced to the great Impressionist masters, but it bears a very personal touch as well. He travels through Tuscany, Provence and Austria continuously for what he refers to as "Study Journeys" to explore new ideas for painting. Gerhard Nesvadba completed his formal education in 1958 and began painting as an independently thinking artist. In 1962 he married and moved to Vienna, where he and his wife had four children. There he settled down as a self-employed painter and illustrator. He participated in exhibitions culminating in his first one-man show in Marble Hall of the Abbey, Copenhagen, in 1971. At this exhibition, the Austrian Federal Ministry for the Arts and Education the famous graphic collection, Albertine, and the Promotion Association in Copenhagen, all purchased his works. In 1971 he received a scholarship from the Ministry for the Arts and an offer for teaching as a professor of the arts. Nesvadba was a professor at the Ministry for several years until he decided to pursue painting full time and to devote more time to raising his family. Exhibitions New York Art Expo, 2000 - 2006 Copenhagen, Denmark, 1998 Goppingen, Germany, 1994 Goteborg, Sweden, 1987 Vienna, Austria, 1970 and 1974 Hamburg, Germany, 1973 Stockholm, Sweden, 1966 Gerhard Nesvadba was born in 1941 in Ober-Ramstadt, Germany. When he was young, Gerhard’s father identified and encouraged his son’s artistic abilities, and after completing his formal education in 1958, began to paint professionally. Moving to Vienna, Austria in 1962, he married and started a family; a family that today includes his very talented and successful son, Christian Nesvadba. After his first group showing in Stockholm in 1968, he participated in additional expositions that led to his first one-man show in Copenhagen in 1971. That same year, he was offered a position as Art Professor at the Ministry for the Arts. He taught for several years before resuming painting as his full time profession. Gerhard Nesvadba belongs to the small company of genuinely skilled artists who have an innate command of the foundations of light, composition, and color. Traditional in approach yet extremely personal in application, his rural landscapes and cottage scenes are effused with tranquil sunlight, and his love of painting is evident in every canvas he creates.
