Gesner Abelard (born February 22, 1922, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti) was a celebrated Haitian painter and sculptor known for his vibrant, naïve/primitive style. Originally trained as a mechanic, Abelard later studied painting and sculpture at the Industrial School of Port-au-Prince under the artist Humberman Charles. His artistic career advanced quickly, and in 1948, he joined the renowned Centre d’Art, Haiti’s leading institution for nurturing creative talent. In 1949, Abelard earned international recognition with a bronze medal at the Exposition marking the bicentennial of Port-au-Prince. Throughout his career, he became widely admired for his poetic depictions of birds, lush tropical trees, religious themes, and scenes of everyday Haitian life—subjects rendered with charm, imagination, and symbolic depth. Abelard is believed to be deceased, yet his legacy endures. His work is documented in major Haitian art publications and remains highly regarded by collectors of Haitian art worldwide.
