Glenn Veeman was born on Vancouver Island and raised on a mixed farm near Outlook, Saskatchewan, along the South Saskatchewan River. His early years exploring the prairie landscape instilled a lasting sensitivity to space, structure, and quiet contemplation—qualities that continue to shape his artistic practice. After studies at the University of Saskatchewan and Dalhousie University, Veeman graduated from medical school at the University of Saskatchewan in 1967. Following further training in Montreal during Expo ’67, he and his wife spent two years in Malawi with CUSO, where he undertook extensive surgical work. It was during this period that he began creating wood carvings, marking the beginning of his serious engagement with visual art. Returning to Saskatoon, Veeman began painting and pursued formal training through community programs and advanced studies in art therapy at the University of Hertfordshire in England. Time spent in London’s major galleries deepened his commitment to abstraction. Alongside a distinguished medical career—including specialization in psychiatry—he maintained an active studio practice, establishing several workspaces in Saskatoon before moving to a home studio in 2010. Veeman’s recent work explores colour, geometry, and material within the disciplined structure of the square. Inspired in part by Josef Albers and his Homage to the Square series, he creates layered polychrome reliefs on birch panels, incorporating cut forms, central tiles, and genuine gold leaf. Influences range from medieval and Byzantine gold traditions to modern colourists such as Mark Rothko and Henri Matisse. Rooted in the sacred geometry of the mandala, Veeman’s process is contemplative and intuitive. Through careful adjustment of colour and form, his work seeks balance, resonance, and quiet intensity within abstraction.
