Gloria Tamerre Petyarre soared to popularity with her very first solo exhibition in 1991. Among the leading artists of the Utopia community, Petyarre became well-known as a batik painter before she put paint on canvas a decade later. Experimental female Aboriginal artists initially tried batik-making. In the 1970s, Petyarre was among the finest. She is one of four renowned painter sisters, all of whom have based their works on the ceremonial body markings. Her sense of movement, direction, and drape gives these paintings an altogether different depth and motion that sets her apart from her contemporaries. Her work is precise, directional, and intentional. Petyarre is undeniably a colorist, the blue, white on black and the orange white on black are dazzling works. The different colors shown in the gallery represent the Bush Medicine Leaves in different seasons. Elegant droplets with dimension show natural movement of nature. Her work has been celebrated in Australia and abroad.
