Goro Sagawa was born in Tokyo, Japan, and graduated from Nihon University with a major in Art, emphasizing visual communication. His professional career began in graphic design, where he worked for an international cosmetic company, developing a refined sense of balance, simplicity, and visual clarity. After retiring, Goro relocated to the Coachella Valley, where he returned fully to his lifelong passion for art. His Sumi ink work is deeply rooted in Japanese calligraphy, and his background in graphic design allows him to merge traditional Sumi techniques with a contemporary visual language. The result is a body of work that is both simple and expressive, emphasizing gesture, restraint, and intentionality. Goro’s ceramic work draws inspiration from the legendary Japanese artist Rosanjin. His pieces reflect the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, celebrating imperfection, natural beauty, and the quiet harmony between art and nature. These elements are expressed through the traditional Japanese concepts of Ka (flower), Cho (butterfly and bird), Fu (wind), and Getsu (moon)—timeless motifs that have guided Japanese art for centuries. Many of Goro’s ceramic pieces are created in connection with his love of cooking, uniting function and artistry. Whether through ink or clay, his work reflects a deep respect for tradition while embracing a personal, contemporary expression rooted in simplicity, nature, and everyday beauty.
