GUY SEYMOUR WARRE MALET, R.B.A, S.W.E.(British, 1900-1973) The landscape painter, watercolorist, and wood-engraver Guy Malet studied at the London School of Art (1924-1926) under Frank Eastman and the painter/illustrator John Hassall (1868-1948); at the Regent Street Polytechnic (1926-1927) and at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art (1927) under the painter Iain MacNab, who encouraged Malet to take up wood-engraving, at which he became well known. During the 1930s, Malet was often in the Channel Islands, where the dramatic coastal scenery influenced his work. His exhibition career began in earnest in 1931, when he first exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. Malet exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Redfern Gallery, and elsewhere. In 1936 he was elected to membership in the Royal Society of British Artists (R.B.A.). In 1947 he was elected to membership in the Society of Wood Engravers (S.W.E.) and the New English Art Club (N.E.A.C.). His work is represented in the national collection housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The National Railway Museum, York, and elsewhere. His work was also displayed at the New English Art Club, Redfern Gallery, Brook Street Gallery, and venues throughout Britain and internationally. Malet’s wood engravings, characterised by their sensitivity and power, were created as autonomous prints rather than illustrations. At their best, Malet's watercolors combine a modernist sensibility of form and perspective with sure draughtsmanship and a traditionalist sensitivity.to the watercolor medium. Literature Benezit, Emmanuel.
