Gwenda Nungurrayi Turner was born in 1978 at Mt Allen Station (Yuelamu) near Yuendumu. A seasoned artist with a profound connection to her indigenous roots, Gwenda embarked on her artistic journey at the age of 15 under the guidance and inspiration of her mother, Maureen Nampitjinpa Hudson. Infused with the richness of her early exposure to her mother's stories and techniques, Gwenda's evolving artistic style has carved out a distinctive and elegant signature over the years. Whether employing a minimalist palette of white on black canvas or embracing a vibrant spectrum of bold colors, Gwenda's creations have grown increasingly intricate with time. Rooted in her traditional country, Warlukurlangu (Bushfire Country), Gwenda draws inspiration from the essence of rivers and sand hills in her paintings. Her childhood experiences of navigating this land with her family, gathering native bush tucker and bush medicine amidst the jilja-marra-marra (sand hill country), are intricately woven into the fabric of her art. The significance of the sand hills lies in their ability to sustain a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Following rainfall, the land undergoes a rejuvenation, marked by the flourishing of grasses and shrubs that, in turn, attract local wildlife, fostering a sustainable cycle of hunting for the community.
