Harriet Merry is an artist and printmaker who initially turned to printmaking as a means to develop themes from her extensive observational drawings. Often favouring the immediacy of sketches over finished paintings, Merry is constantly searching for ways to retain the light spontaneity of sketching while evolving her sketchbook work. Drawing primarily from life, she depicts her family, daily surroundings, and the people she lives and works with, frequently turning the lens on herself. She is particularly fascinated by capturing movement within still imagery and exploring how the same subject matter can be repeated to render new projects and representations. While her printmaking practice began with drypoint, etching, and aquatint, she has recently expanded into lithography and silkscreen printing, continuing her pursuit of translating the vitality of a sketch into print. Harriet’s prints have been exhibited with the SGFA, ING, Green & Stone, Ironbridge, RBSA, Leamington Spa Museum, and the Herbert, Coventry. Notably, she was a contestant on Sky’s Portrait Artist of the Year in 2022. Her work has featured in Artists’ & Illustrators’ Magazine, Contemporary Collage Magazine, The New Cartoonist, and Pressing Matters. She was elected an Associate Member of the Society of Women Artists in 2024 and became a full member in 2025. Currently, Harriet is working on a graphic novel which was longlisted for the First Graphic Novel Award in 2025.
