Helen A Taylor’s practice is a meticulous exploration of the relationship between the natural world and the human-made structures that influence it. Her work investigates how botanical life interacts with curated collections, architectural forms, and the landscapes we inhabit. Drawing profound inspiration from her own garden, Helen’s prints portray plants not merely as wild specimens, but as living components of a space curated by the gardener. Her work frequently returns to the theme of seasonality, capturing the shifting atmosphere and textures of her personal outdoor sanctuary throughout the year. Beyond her own gates, Helen finds inspiration in the places she visits, often juxtaposing floral elements with the rigid lines of architecture to find harmony between the organic and the man-made. Technique and ProcessHelen works primarily in woodcut and linocut, though her technical approach is uniquely multidisciplinary. A defining characteristic of her style is the combination of the printed image with watercolour painting. By hand-colouring her prints, she achieves a nuanced, expansive palette that traditional ink layers alone cannot provide—a conscious choice that has become a cornerstone of her artistic identity. Every piece is underpinned by intense, detailed drawing. While the journey from initial sketch to final print is lengthy and meticulous, Helen views this process as vital to her work, ensuring that the discipline of the craft is visible in every finished piece. Professional BackgroundHelen holds a First-Class degree in Fine Art and an MA in Printmaking. Her expertise and contribution to the field are recognised through her memberships in several prestigious British art institutions:Associate Member of the Society of Women Artists (ASWA)Member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art (SGFA – The Drawing Society)Member of the Printmakers Council In 2024, her technical skill was further celebrated when she was awarded the Essdee Lino Print Prize at the Ironbridge Print Prize exhibition.
