American, b. 1990 Based in New York City, Ian Bertram is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts whose work defines the intersection of the divine and the grotesque. Known for a meticulous, labor-intensive style characterized by dense hatching and "meditative mark-making," Bertram creates visceral, primal portraits that feel both ancient and otherworldly. Bertram reached a career milestone in 2020, winning the Eisner Award for Best Limited Series for the critically acclaimed dystopian epic Little Bird. He has since expanded that universe with the sprawling prequel Precious Metal, further cementing his reputation as one of the most innovative visual world-builders in the medium. His portfolio includes high-profile collaborations with DC Comics, Marvel, and Dark Horse, as well as celebrated solo exhibitions in galleries from Paris to New York. Moving beyond the traditional comic book page, Bertram continues to challenge the boundaries of his craft. Whether through massive fine-art canvases or experimental storytelling formats, he remains dedicated to exploring the strange, the bizarre, and the beautifully macabre.
