Iris Scott is best known for her groundbreaking work as a finger painting artist, building an entire career around the question: must a paintbrush be the primary tool of painting? From 2009 to 2019, she worked exclusively with her fingertips, developing a distinctive, tactile style in oil paint. This commitment led her to New York City, where she lived and worked in Brooklyn and brought finger painting into a contemporary fine art context. Her work earned representation with Filo Sofi Arts, and her 2019 solo exhibition, Ritual in Pairing, was praised by Jerry Saltz and featured in New York Magazine and Artnet. In 2019, Iris left the city for a remote life in Northern New Mexico, where she and her husband built a home and studio on 500 acres. During this period, she also became a mother. Although her practice has since expanded, finger painting remains the foundation of her work—an approach that continues to define her relationship to paint as immediate, physical, and deeply personal.
