Isabel Turban (b. 1972, Montevideo, Uruguay) is an abstract contemporary artist based in New York whose work is defined by layered mixed-media paintings that merge memory, travel, and material resonance. Turban studied Industrial Design at the Centro de Diseño Industrial in Montevideo before collaborating with renowned Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró at his iconic atelier Casa Pueblo in Punta del Este. She moved to New York in 2001, where she continued her artistic development at the Art Students League, studying with instructors including Charles Hinman, Jack Farragaso, and Mariano del Rosario.Turban has exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions in the United States and internationally. Her work has been featured at Artemisa Gallery in New York, The Curators Art Project Gallery in Miami, Art Student League in New York, and The New York Public Library — illustrating her active presence in key contemporary art contexts. She has also presented work at important art fairs including PINTA Miami and Art on Paper New York, further underscoring her engagement with both gallery and fair audiences.Turban’s mixed-media paintings are created through a unique process that begins with collected maps from her travels — physical traces of personal experience and cultural encounter that are transferred, layered, and reimagined through acrylic, charcoal, and other media on canvas or paper. For the artist, these maps represent memory, cultural experience, and political history, ultimately transforming specific locations into evocative, abstract territories of feeling and imagination. Her work has been recognized with multiple awards from the Art Students League of New York, including the Merit Scholarship, the Donn Russell Grant, and the Red Dot Distinction — honors reflecting both her dedication and artistic promise. Turban’s paintings are sought after for their thoughtful interplay of material, memory, and visual rhythm, offering modern collectors works that are both intellectually engaging and visually compelling in contemporary interiors.
