James ColemanJames Coleman is a name long associated with sweeping skies, tropical rain forests, deep woodland shadows and silent desert vistas. His paintings continue to captivate viewers with their rich color, gentle mood and luminous atmosphere. Born in Hollywood, California in 1949, James showed early talent as a storyteller and creator. While he did not share the athletic interests of many of his friends, his imagination quickly set him apart. His love of film and fine art would ultimately lead to a remarkable career in animation and later in contemporary fine art. Disney YearsJames began his career with Walt Disney Studios in the summer of 1969 after his mother, a Disney secretary, helped him secure a job in the studio mailroom. His turning point came when he submitted one of his paintings to the Disney studio art show. Several artists immediately recognized his talent and encouraged him to explore background painting for animation.James joined the background department and soon worked on his first film, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. The process sparked his passion for background design and color styling. After completing The Rescuers, his first feature film, he was promoted to Background Department Supervisor. He held this role for nearly seventeen years.During his time at Disney, James contributed to twelve feature films and more than thirty short subjects. His work appears in classics such as Mickey's Christmas Carol, The Fox and the Hound, The Great Mouse Detective, The Black Cauldron, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. His backgrounds helped define the distinctive atmosphere and emotional tone of each film.James often reflects on the influence Disney had on his artistic vision. The studio taught him how to compose a scene in a way that draws viewers into the world he creates. When he paints a landscape, he approaches it as a storyteller. He romanticizes the setting and adds feeling rather than simply recreating a place. That foundation continues to make his work immediately recognizable. Fine Art CareerIn 1991, after twenty two years with Disney, James shifted his focus fully to fine art. He was ready to dedicate all of his energy to painting. His canvases soon became known for vibrant color, atmospheric depth, and careful design.James works in oil, watercolor, gouache and pastel. His impressionistic style and luminous technique have made him one of the most collected artists working today. His paintings are warm, inviting and emotionally engaging, and they can be found in private and corporate collections around the world.A committed naturalist and environmentalist, James actively supports the National Parks and other ecological organizations. He has been a five time finalist in the Arts for the Parks competition.Over the course of more than three decades in both animation and fine art, James Coleman has established himself as a major figure in contemporary art. His work is represented by respected galleries throughout North America, Asia and the Hawaiian Islands, and his influence continues to inspire collectors and artists alike.
