Jan Shapiro is a Boston-based oil painter whose palette knife works explore light, texture, and the emotional rhythm of place. Trained at the High School of Art & Design in New York City and Parsons School of Design, Jan began her career as a visual designer specializing in branding, packaging, and web design. Her strong sense of composition and color—rooted in decades of design practice—continues to inform her painting. Working en plein air and from her SoWa studio, Jan creates expressive landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes inspired by the Boston skyline, Cape Cod and its outer reaches, the shores of Maine, and her travels abroad. Her richly layered oils often incorporate gold leaf, adding luminosity and depth to her textured surfaces. Jan’s work has been exhibited throughout New England, including a two-series exhibition at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital featuring Pathways & Crossroads and Coming Out of Darkness, bodies of work created during a period of profound personal recovery. She is a member of the Cambridge Art Association, AGC at the Stove Factory, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), and the SoWa Artists Guild.
