Janette Beckman - Janette Beckman is a British-born photographer who started her career in the early ages of punk rock working for publications like The Face and Melody Maker. She photographed various bands including The Clash and Boy George and shot three album covers for The Police while documenting the youth culture of the era. After moving to NRC in 1983, Beckman was allured to the underground hip-hop scene where she shot early pioneers of the culture such as RUN DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, and Big Daddy Kane. Beckman has published five books, including: ‘Rap, Portraits & Lyrics of a Generation of Black Rockers’ and ‘The MashUp, Hip Hop Photos Remixed by Iconic Graffiti Artists’. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Annenberg Space for Photography, Los Angeles and Kunsthal Rotterdam, amongst others. Beckman’s work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, the Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe, France, and the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, Japan. Beckman’s commercial work includes assignments for clients such as Apple, Dior, Levi’s, Schott, and Shinola. Cey Adams - A New York City native, emerged from the downtown graffiti movement to exhibit alongside artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He appeared in the historic 1983 PBS documentary Style Wars, which tracks the rise of subway graffiti in New York. As the creative director of hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons’s Def Jam Recordings, he co-founded the Drawing Board, the label’s in-house visual design firm, where he created visual identities, album covers, logos, and advertising campaigns for Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., Maroon 5, and Jay-Z. Adams has participated in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, MoCA, and more. His practice involves dismantling various imagery and paper elements to build multiple layers of color, texture, shadow, and light. Drawing inspiration from ’60s pop art, sign painting, and comic books, Adams’s work focuses on themes including pop culture, race and gender relations, and cultural and community issues.
