Janice Mauro is a multidisciplinary sculptor and visual artist whose practice moves fluidly across bronze, terra cotta, gypsum, paper, and wood — as well as drawing, printmaking, and conceptual work. Rooted in a sustained inquiry into material and form, her work occupies the space between the deeply personal and the broadly human. Mauro's sculptures resist easy categorization. Whether carving wood or casting bronze, she brings an unflinching attention to surface, structure, and meaning — qualities equally present in her Covid Memorial Series, a body of work that transforms collective mourning into lasting visual form. Her ongoing project, Layers of Janice, extends this introspective rigor, tracing the accumulation of identity, memory, and artistic voice over time. In 2023, Mauro was awarded the Hammerschlag Award by the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA), recognizing the sustained ambition and depth of her practice.
