Janine Medlin is best known for her atmospheric landscapes, whether a distant horizon, ancient trees, or an old southern barn.Inspiration comes from life experience in the every day, as well as from places she’s traveled. She sees color and texture in the details of a single element of nature or the atmosphere found in a stand of trees or a walk on the beach. It is a combination of the way light hits a scene or an object, and the feeling it evokes. Janine is inspired by the notion that there is beauty in the brokenness, and often the brokenness is necessary to bring forth beauty. Themes in her work offer a sense of calm and hope to allow the viewer to enter in to a brief respite from the busy and often chaotic world. Her composition draws the viewer into the setting, leading to a distant horizon or far off land. She creates movement with heavy brush and palette knife strokes, complimented with the play of colors and light and shadow. She never intended to pursue a career in art, but sees it as God's sense of humor and supreme grace that people are drawn in to her work and that she has the privilege of reflecting some aspect of the Creator on canvas. Janine lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband, two sons, and one very earnest Golden Retriever. Artist Statement“It’s not so much about learning to paint as it is about learning to see.” This is one of the first lessons of painting that set Janine on the path of learning to see beyond the obvious, into an object or scene. She employs color, contrast and texture with brush and palette knife to reveal what she feels from the subject.
