In 2008 JD and Phil Romano had a vision to open a space that would showcase artworks from the artists deemed at the pinnacle of their craft. Together with Romano’s extensive business experience, and JDs unparalleled artistry, they created Samuel Lynne Galleries. The energy that emanated from their ambitions drew in the best artists in the world, and we feel constantly privileged to represent both the gallery space and the genius creators whose art fills the walls. What is Reflectionism? Reflectionism, as it should, changes fluidly based on the intentions of the artist. For JD Miller, Reflectionism is founded in the idea that the energy we put out into the universe is reflecting back at us. With that, Miller’s artworks can vary depending on the energy he meditates on before a painting session. The medium he chooses, which he coined 3-Dimensional Oil, works especially well for the reflectionist movement, being that the texture that this substance can maintain is one that brings a sense of liveliness to the artwork, the energy that Reflectionism speaks for. Hundreds of years from now, somewhere deep inside of the thick inclusions of oil paint on a reflectionist canvas will remain undried. The notion that the painting is still alive, still capable of change, refers to the influence of reflectionist thought. Sometimes the style can appear bold, and sometimes ethereal, but it is always reflectionist. Many of the Reflectionist are based in the Dallas area and it has become the de facto hub of the style. What is it about that area that attracts these artists and how much day-to-day does JD Miller have with that group? The influx of reflectionist artists in Dallas is single handedly Miller’s doing. He has graciously taken on many mentees and gathered with likeminded artists who by proxy develop a reflectionist attitude. Many artists already believe the philosophy of Reflectionism without having a word for it, and it is JD’s communal spirit in the Dallas arts world that has allowed this style to cornerstone itself in Dallas. Miller will always be the founder of Reflectionism, but he eagerly spreads its philosophy to likeminded artists in the community. For the new collector, what is your best piece of advice when selecting fine art? Our best piece of advice to a new collector when selecting a fine artwork would be to buy something you love and consider it the building blocks of a longstanding relationship. His artistic talents can be traced back to childhood, and then through his musical abilities. As a musician studying pottery and sculpture at university, JD began to get inspired by the other mediums of art. Upon finding oil-painting, Miller recalls it as a clear moment of realizing his true calling. Since then, Miller has spent countless hours in the studio perfecting his craft, and continues to regularly paint new collections and commissioned artworks.
