Jean Noble is an abstract artist whose vibrant and textural work explores the boundary between representation and reality. A member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI), the Society of Women Artists (SWA), and the Chelsea Art Society, Jean is celebrated for her ability to deconstruct complex cityscapes into compelling narratives of shape and colour. Inspiration & Subject Matter Jean’s recent body of work is deeply rooted in the evolving topography of London, drawing profound inspiration from the juxtaposition of the city’s history and its future. Her sketches capture the area around Canary Wharf and the Docklands, where the towering, reflective glass edifices of the business sector contrast with the organic, bustling life of the River Thames. Viewing the river as the "artery of London," Jean observes the constant motion of cargo, tourists, and houseboats—from Paddington Basin to St Katherine’s Docks. She does not seek to replicate these scenes photographically; rather, she absorbs the shapes, shadows, and reflections to communicate the experience of the place. As she notes, the diversity of people and the exchange of knowledge in the city enrich her work, providing "so many wonderful shapes to dive into." Philosophy & Technique Describing her art as a "dance between abstraction and reality," Jean adheres to the belief that art is the extraordinary glance at the ordinary. Influenced by the philosophies of Degas and Kandinsky, she seeks to instill a sense of mystery and poetry into her compositions. By omitting details, distorting forms, and using non-associated colours, she aims to readjust the viewer's perception, offering a fresh viewpoint while ensuring the work remains grounded in genuine observation. Her process begins with site sketches that capture the essence of a location without becoming formulaic. Working primarily with Golden Open acrylic paint on Saunders Waterford 600gms gesso-primed paper or board, her finished pieces evolve through a process of layering and reorganization. She applies paint using palette knives, brushes, and even her fingers, focusing heavily on the texture of the picture surface to create a strong, tactile image. Education & Background Jean Noble’s artistic background is extensive, including studies at Loughborough College of Art and a Design degree from Kingston University. She has further honed her craft through short courses at Central St Martins and the ‘Summer Intensive’ at The Slade School of Fine Art.
