Jeff Muhs was born in Southampton, New York in 1966. His father, a third generation hunting and fishing guide, instilled in Jeff an intimate knowledge of their local natural environment. Thus the barrier beach of Long Island’s south shore would later become a major recurring motif throughout Jeff’s work. In his early years Muhs, also a world champion sculptor, first learned the art of wood sculpting from his father. It is this traditional and exacting art form that developed Jeff’s dedication and penchant for excellence - a quality he has carried throughout his life. From 1984 to 1988 Jeff attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and received a BFA. Muhs is known as an innovative painter and sculptor, working in a variety of genres and mediums. Continually inspired by his discovery of truth in pure artistic form, his paintings reexamine and update abstract painting, adding his singular vision to the discipline. Jeff Muhs’ work can be found in several public collections, namely Guild Hall Museum, East Hampton, NY, Cantor Fitzgerald, Time Warner, Inc., Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, CA, Hunter Museum, Memphis, TN, and Ward Museum, Salisbury, MD.
