Based in the serene landscape of East Riding, Yorkshire, Jill Ford creates evocative porcelain sculptures that capture the raw, ethereal beauty of high-altitude environments. Her latest collection, Mountain Edges, serves as a tactile exploration of the world’s most formidable peaks—transforming the fragility of fine white porcelain into a medium that speaks of geological time, vulnerability, and awe. The Work: Mountain EdgesJill’s work oscillates between tall, slender standing forms and wide, expansive vessels. Each piece begins its life on the wheel or through hand-building before undergoing a process of radical alteration. By joining multiple sections of thrown porcelain, Jill achieves a towering verticality that mimics the precariousness of mountain pinnacles. Her "Open Forms" transition from traditional shallow bowls into jagged, sculptural landscapes. Through the addition of porcelain shards with shattered edges and the application of fluxing glazes, Jill masterfully suggests the haunting beauty of melting glaciers and ice sheets on the brink of collapse. Technique & TextureThe signature of Jill’s practice lies in her meticulous surface decoration:Carving & Construction: Hand-carved "water channels" and slab-built obelisks recreate the rugged crevices and windswept cornices found at the summit. The Palette: A sophisticated use of oxides accentuates eroded, rugged surfaces, contrasting sharply with the pristine whiteness of the clay.Glaze Chemistry: Jill employs a variety of crawling, glossy, and opaque white glazes to mimic the shifting states of ice—from glittering, frozen summits to the soft, matte finish of fresh snow. Displayed on wooden plinths to emphasise their height and exposure, Jill’s vessels are more than mere objects; they are quiet, powerful meditations on the natural world’s most majestic—and most fragile—landscapes.
