Joe Basco's journey from a military illustrator to a seasoned airline pilot to a dedicated artist is a testament to his passion and talent. Born in 1954 in northern California, Joe's artistic journey began in his youth, leading him through various creative endeavors. Starting with tee shirt designs and local ads, Joe honed his skills through high school and beyond. His career took a turn when the Army recognized his artistic abilities during his service in the early 1970s. Stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia, Joe contributed to training manuals and television productions, setting the stage for his diverse artistic portfolio. His time in Germany further expanded his skills in photography and darkroom work, earning him recognition in a Europe-wide photo contest in 1974. After military service, Joe settled in Orange, Texas, where he balanced work in printing with flight school, eventually embarking on a 40-year career as a pilot with various commercial airlines. Retiring as a United Airlines Captain in 2019, Joe returned to his true passion: art. Now based in the serene landscapes of North Georgia in Canton, Joe thrives as a painter specializing in watercolor, pastel, and oil. He has earned acclaim in the local art scene, winning prestigious awards such as Best of Show at the Southern Appalachian Artists Guild Member show in 2021. Joe is an active member of several artist associations, including the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild, Oil Painters of America, and the Hiawassee Plein Air Group. His dedication to Plein Air painting has seen him excel in regional competitions, capturing the essence of North Georgia's natural beauty with his brush.
