John Flores is a contemporary ceramic artist based in Yucca Valley, California. He received his BFA with a focus in ceramics from California State University, Fullerton in 2019. Working primarily with traditional hand-building techniques, Flores combines classical clay methods with contemporary surface and glazing approaches. At first glance, his sculptures may feel otherworldly, yet they draw closely from everyday experience. Botanical forms merge with human and animal features—leaves become skin, blooms hold faces, and cacti sprout watchful eyes. Subtle details, such as toes peeking from beneath layered foliage, create moments of familiarity within the fantastical, blurring boundaries between terra, flora, and fauna.Flores’ work reflects a belief in the interconnectedness of living systems. Nature appears not as backdrop or symbol, but as an active presence—one that parallels personal experience. His sculptures suggest narratives of growth, transition, and self-discovery, shaped by observation and lived moments.Through clay, Flores creates forms that speak to transformation as an ongoing state. The figures hold traces of change and adaptation, offering quiet reflections on how identity shifts over time.Represented by Illumine Gallery. Please inquire for commissions and shipping options.
