José Manuel Mesías is a Cuban contemporary artist whose work delves into memory, history, and the passage of time through a poetic visual language that merges realism and conceptual reflection. His paintings often explore the remnants of Cuba’s social and cultural landscape, transforming found objects, archival materials, and historical narratives into haunting meditations on identity and loss. A graduate of the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana, Mesías has developed a practice rooted in meticulous technique and philosophical inquiry. His compositions juxtapose fragments of the past with subtle surrealist undertones, inviting viewers to reflect on the coexistence of decay and beauty, nostalgia and resilience. Mesías has exhibited extensively in Cuba, the United States, Latin America, and Europe, including shows at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales (CDAV) in Havana, and several international art fairs. His works are held in both private and institutional collections, recognized for their emotional depth and painterly precision. He currently lives and works between Havana and Madrid, continuing to explore the layers of personal and collective memory through a practice that bridges the intimate and the universal.
