Joseph Cornell was born in Nyack, New York in 1903. Famously reclusive, Joseph Cornell never traveled beyond the New York City area. Cornell was a self-taught artist. He was a pioneer of Assemblage and an avant-garde filmmaker. He often incorporated discarded materials into his work, crafting surreal assemblages from the simplest of images.
