Juliana Plexxo is a Colombian artist whose work delves into the essential duality of existence, the spiritual dimension of human life, and the reconnection between humanity and nature. Her visual language is rooted in metal engraving — a technique she has redefined during her residency at Studio 46 in Barcelona, the former workshop of masters such as Miró, Richard Hamilton and Dalí. Her creative process is radical: each plate is printed only once and then destroyed, transforming every piece into a unique and unrepeatable artifact that symbolizes death, transformation, and rebirth. Born in a taurine environment, Plexxo often reflects on her earliest encounter with mortality. As she recalls,“The first time I came into contact with death was at the age of three, when I saw the bulls for the first time.” Through her art, she seeks to convey the dance between life and death, much like in bullfighting, where beauty and tragedy coexist in a single gesture. The bull thus becomes her muse and mirror, while the recurring eyes and profiles in her work evoke intimatememories of her childhood in Colombia. Though born in Colombia, Juliana spent ten years living in Ecuador — a country that deeply shaped her artistic and spiritual sensibility. There, she discovered her profound connection with nature and encountered the work of Oswaldo Guayasamín, who became a pivotal influence in her creative evolution. The expressive power and social commitment of Guayasamín’s art left an indelible mark on Plexxo, inspiring her to explore the emotional and symbolic depth of engraving as a medium of protest, memory, and transcendence. Educated between Latin America and Europe, Plexxo was named “Young Talent of the Year 2022” by the University of California, Berkeley. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Paris, Bogotá, and Quito, as well as in major international art fairs and monumental public murals. Inspired since childhood by the mythic power of the bull — her totemic muse — Plexxo’s art transcends the act of seeing; it invites the viewer to feel, remember, and live the eternal dance between life and death.
