Born in 1982, in Olama, Cameroon, Justin Ebanda is a visual artist who completed his graduation from Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'arts de Paris Cergy, France as well as from the Institut des Beaux-Arts of the University of Douala, Cameroon. His artworks have been auctioned multiple times. Ebanda is listed among the ten Artists to watch at ART X Lagos, a written piece from Art South Africa on October 2021, in MutualArt’s artist press archive. Ebanda’s subjects predominantly deal with concerns of collective memory and African identity. Individual witnesses and experiences are prioritized in the artist’s work, which also serves as a starting punch for the dialogue. Ebanda draws attention to communal experiences and their impact on the psyche, which eventually sneak into his practice. Often referring to African history and contemporaneity, the artist creates a multicoloured site in his works for the younger generation to imagine. Expressionist and pop in nature, his works remark on vivacity and tendencies of youthful life. The most interesting feature of his paintings is the colourful patches that serve as a ground for the blissful aura. Bringing a lively palette, the narratives by black figures are post-contemporary, engaged in their own world of blithe. He draws inspiration from artists like Georges Didi-Huberman, Bruce Clarke, Sammy Baloji, Christian Boltanski, and Allen Ruppersberg, especially concerning the subject of collective memory. In addition, they are an announcement of the new language of art for the fraternity.Justin Ebanda lives and works between Marrakech, Yaoundé, Douala and Paris.
