Kate Bentley RI RSW SWA is a multi-award-winning artist whose work is defined by a compelling blend of atmospheric narrative and technical mastery. Although she began her artistic career in sculpture and theatre design, Bentley transitioned to full-time professional painting in 1999. This background in stage design remains a palpable influence in her work today; she possesses a unique ability to manipulate light and composition, bringing a sense of drama and theatricality to the canvas. Describing herself as a "painter of life," Kate’s practice is deeply rooted in her surroundings. Her process often begins en plein air or through rigorous life drawing sessions, which serve as the foundational research for her finished works. However, it is within the studio that her distinct visual language truly emerges. Here, she engages in extensive experimentation—revisiting studies, layering mark-making techniques, and employing strong chiaroscuro to create images that are as emotive as they are technical. Kate’s standing in the contemporary art world is reflected in her elected membership to three of the UK’s most prestigious art societies: The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI), The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), and the Society of Women Artists (SWA). Exhibitions and AccoladesKate Bentley exhibits extensively across the UK. She is a regular exhibitor at major federation showcases, including those of the RI, RSW, SWA, and the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). Her work is also frequently presented at premier art fairs, including the Edinburgh Art Fair, Manchester Art Fair, and the Affordable Art Fair. Her gallery representation spans the country, with notable exhibitions at The Open Eye Gallery, Morningside Gallery, and The Whitehouse Gallery in Scotland, as well as Gallery Different and the Catto Gallery in London. Kate has received numerous accolades for both her oil and watercolour works. She has twice been shortlisted for the New Light Prize and, most recently, was shortlisted for the prestigious British Art Prize 2025.
