Katy McFadden’s ceramic sculptures are born from an intimate dialogue with nature and a deep respect for the unknown. Her creative process reflects her lifelong curiosity about form, pattern, and transformation—both in art and in life. Outside the studio, she finds inspiration through immersion in the natural world, hiking, kayaking, swimming, and exploring remote landscapes that inform her sense of rhythm, scale, and light. Originally trained in philosophy, McFadden discovered ceramics almost by accident, taking a clay course to fulfill university requirements—and never turning back. What began as an academic detour became a life’s calling. She built her first studio with the help of mentors and spent years seeking out teachers, travel, and direct experience to deepen her craft. Her studies have taken her around the world—from Oaxaca, Mexico, where she was awarded a private grant to study traditional sculpture, to the Far East, where Tibetan influences shaped her contemplative “stillness” series. McFadden’s work embodies both strength and vulnerability. She describes the ceramic process as a “dance with the unknown,” where each stage—building, glazing, firing, and cooling—requires patience, endurance, and a willingness to surrender control. “The moment of opening the kiln,” she says, “is a moment of truth—success or failure, or something in between. You must accept both the gifts and the dogs of the fire.” Through her career, McFadden has explored the elemental nature of Earth and Fire, embracing the communal and transformative aspects of ceramic art. Her sculptures reveal a profound connection between humanity and the natural world, rooted in risk, endurance, and reverence for process.
