Kelly Birkenruth (b. 1972) produces contemporary realist paintings rooted in Old Master methodologies, focusing on portraits and still lifes that investigate the relationship between technical execution and emotional resonance. Her work demonstrates sustained engagement with light modeling, compositional structure, and precise rendering of surface qualities. Following her undergraduate studies at Pennsylvania State University, Birkenruth spent several years as a fashion model in Paris and Tokyo, during which museum visits to study historical paintings influenced her decision to pursue fine art training. She subsequently attended Otis College of Art in Los Angeles and studied with Daniel Sprick, Steven Assael, and Jesus Emmanuel Villarreal. Her paintings have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, and Rockwell Museum, and she has received awards from Art Renewal Center, Portrait Society of America, and Salmagundi Club. Birkenruth is represented by select galleries across the United States including Abend Gallery.
