Kim English is celebrated for his ability to capture the simple beauty of everyday life with an extraordinary mastery of light and shadow. Known for his distinctive use of chiaroscuro, his paintings reveal the subtle harmony between illumination and darkness, creating an atmosphere that immerses the viewer in both mood and movement. Whether depicting a bustling street-side fruit stand in Mexico or the quiet glow of sunlight filtering through a window, his work is deeply evocative, rich in depth and texture, and ultimately centered on the power of paint itself. English employs the alla prima method, completing each painting in a single sitting to preserve a sense of immediacy and spontaneity. This instinctive approach allows him to maintain a dynamic energy in his brushwork, reflecting the fleeting nature of his subjects and the ever-changing interplay of light. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1957 and raised in a rural community near Colorado Springs, English honed his craft at the Rocky Mountain School of Art, where he later joined the faculty. He has since become a highly regarded instructor, teaching at the Art Students League of Denver and the Scottsdale Artists’ School. His work has been widely exhibited, earning prestigious honors such as the Gold Medal of Honor from the Allied Artists of America, as well as recognition from the National Academy of Design, the Oil Painters of America, and the Salmagundi Club. Through his bold, expressive style and commitment to the alla prima technique, Kim English continues to captivate audiences, offering glimpses of life through compositions that are as immediate as they are timeless.
