Laura Browning is a painter of water and light, working in layered oil glazes to explore reflection, movement, and atmosphere. Her practice centers on the subtle ways light behaves on the surface of water—bending, scattering, dissolving into color. Through patient, transparent layering, Browning builds paintings that feel immersive rather than descriptive.Water is both subject and structure in her work. Currents, ripples, and shifting reflections guide each composition, creating luminous fields where color interacts gently and continuously. The paintings do not attempt to fix a moment in time, but instead hold the sensation of being near water—the calm, the depth, the slow unfolding of movement. Each work is rooted in a specific lived experience, often drawn from time spent outdoors on bright summer days. Travel and exploration play a vital role in her process; new environments sharpen her attention and provide the emotional and visual catalysts for her paintings. These experiences remain present in the work as memory—felt rather than narrated.Browning describes the act of painting as meditative. The studio becomes a space of quiet focus, mirroring the experience of watching light move across water. The repetition of glazing, adjusting, and waiting allows the paintings to develop slowly, revealing depth and nuance over time.Laura Browning received her BFA from California State University, Long Beach. She has taught workshops at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and interned with the Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. She paints using environmentally responsible oils and solvents from her home studio in the San Francisco Bay Area.Represented by Illumine Gallery. Please inquire for commissions and shipping options.
