Born in Québec city, Laurence Vallières is famous for her large-scale sculptures in cardboard. Vallières studied at Concordia University in visual arts before doing an exchange program in Los Angeles to further her knowledge in ceramics. After doing an artist residency in Russia she appropriated the street art influence in her work. Her process begins with a sketch that evolves into à figurine. As the animal takes shape, it starts to adopt a personality of its own. Vallières' use of cardboard as a medium is as important as the figures portrayed. With her sculptures she successfully highlights à growing environmental issue by using a material that is widely available and very often discarded. Her work is popular throughout the world, because her compositions manage to carry the emotions of these animals too often forgotten. By creating such animated pieces Vallières manages to bring joy to our inner child while also illuminating the issues faced by our animal kingdom in today's day and age.
