Liz Watts is a sculptor and ceramicist whose practice is defined by an intriguing tension between technical precision and whimsical narrative. Working primarily in porcelain, bronze, and papier-mâché, she explores the delicate boundary between the figurative and the decorative, often pushing the limits of traditional ceramic forms. Before dedicating herself to her artistic practice, Liz spent a decade working as a veterinary surgeon. This foundational chapter of her career remains a vital pulse within her work; her deep understanding of physiology provides an unmistakable anatomical edge to her subjects. Liz often likens the technical complexities of firing and glazing to the ‘diagnostics’ of medicine—a process of meticulous problem-solving and investigation that she finds deeply rewarding. Her formal training in sculpture and ceramics took place in France, where she was mentored by skilled craftswomen in the art of porcelain overglaze techniques. This period significantly shaped her aesthetic, imbuing her work with a certain ‘crazy French château’ charm—an eccentric elegance that bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary character.Liz is particularly drawn to porcelain for its surprising tactile strength and its vibrant affinity for colour. As a self-described ‘image chaser’, she frequently moves beyond the plinth into immersive installation formats, enjoying the spatial challenges and new narratives these larger-scale pieces demand. In 2022, Liz was elected a Full Member of the Society of Women Artists (SWA). Her work has garnered significant critical acclaim, including the Cavendish Sculpture Prize at the Mall Galleries (2019) and First Prize at the United Society of Artists Annual Exhibition at Bankside Gallery (2016).
