Luisa Mesa is a Cuban-American artist based in Miami, whose work is rooted in an intuitive and process-driven approach to mark-making. She earned her BFA from Florida International University (FIU), where she specialized in photography and painting. During her time at FIU, Mesa began exploring a highly personal and instinctive style of drawing that laid the foundation for her current practice. Line, repetition, and layering remain central to her work, with forms and shapes continuously evolving through her dynamic process. Initially working on paper, Mesa later transitioned to wood panels and, in 2018, expanded her practice to include glass as a primary medium. Utilizing inks, enamel markers, and various paints, she creates intricate and multi-dimensional compositions that engage both materiality and transparency. Mesa has exhibited widely, and her work is held in several prestigious collections, including Four Seasons Dubai, Morgan Stanley, Miami-Dade College, Sloan Kettering, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, among others. Her latest series for Drew Marc Gallery delves deeply into her personal history, utilizing a distinctive mark-making technique that unifies her body of work across multiple mediums. This collection features large-scale, one-of-a-kind resin pieces alongside striking glass installations, which can be presented as individual works or cohesive sets. Mesa’s signature mark-making captivates the eye, incorporating lens-like elements that amplify significant details, drawing viewers into layered narratives of memory and perception. Artist StatementMy creative process is deeply rooted in the present moment. Because my work is intricate and repetitive, I rely on intuition, allowing spontaneity to guide the direction of each piece. This approach extends beyond my art—it is a philosophy that teaches me to embrace the unknown and let go of control. I work with a range of mediums, including ink, enamel, watercolor, gouache, and digital imagery, each chosen for its unique transformative properties. My use of color is instinctive, often pairing unexpected combinations that find harmony through contrast. Photographic elements appear in many of my works, serving as visual anchors for personal reflections. Through digital layering, I construct imagined worlds that blend memory and abstraction, exploring the connections between people, places, and time. My installations speak to the tension between individuality and interconnectedness. Each component stands as a unique entity, yet together they form a unified whole—much like the intricate layers within my work and the relationships they represent.
